Colorado Central Railroad Project Update: Exciting Progress in 2024!

Updated: Aug 4

Welcome back to the Colorado Central blog! We’ve been quietly working behind the scenes, and now it’s time to share the significant strides we’ve made since our last update in 2023. Here’s a detailed look at our progress and upcoming plans.

Track Extension and New Infrastructure

We are thrilled to announce that we have extended the track to 1500 feet. This extension will allow for more operational flexibility and enhance the overall experience for visitors. Additionally, we have installed a switch and siding, crucial components for efficient rail operations.

New Rolling Stock Acquisitions

Our collection has grown significantly with the acquisition of five narrow gauge cars:

  1. 1 D&RG Drop Bottom Gondola

  • Purpose: Maintenance of way operations.

  1. 2 D&RG High Side Gondolas

  • Conversion: These will be converted into open-air cars for a unique passenger experience.

  1. 2 D&RG Box Cars

  • Usage: Currently utilized for equipment and parts storage.

Locomotive Restoration

We have successfully acquired a 1958 GE25 Ton Diesel Locomotive. This 25-tonner is being restored to operational condition and will be instrumental in our construction and maintenance activities.

Depot and Section House Restoration

Our efforts to restore the historic depot and section house are ongoing. Later this year, we plan to complete the walkway and stairway around the section house and continue working on the interior spaces. This restoration is crucial in preserving the historical significance of our site and providing an authentic experience for our visitors.

Collaboration with the City of Black Hawk

We are thrilled to be working closely with the City of Black Hawk on exciting new developments. One of the major initiatives is a tourist railroad that promises to bring significant benefits to our region. This project involves extensive planning and collaboration, with feasibility studies already underway to ensure its success.

You can read more about these plans and their potential impact on our community in The Mountain-Ear (themtnear).

This partnership is a pivotal step toward realizing our vision of a vibrant, historically enriched rail experience. Stay tuned for further updates as we progress with this exciting collaboration.
